Community Members' Voices
Do children – our patients – go to school under contract to watch commercials? Unfortunately, for
many the answer is yes. More than 8 million children watch computers or television in schools with
demanding and persistent commercials.
This letter was addressed to the presidential candidates expressing their alarm at the barrage of marketing
targeting American children.

Shielding Children
The Christian Science Monitor article by Susan Linn and Diane E. Levine.
"Marketing to children has become so pervasive that the ad world apparently thinks it warrants
a separate awards ceremony." This article expresses concern over advertising in schools and the
way it affects children safety, their health and their creativity.
With the growing number of fast food restaurants appearing in school cafeterias, children's nutrition
may suffer.
A speech given by Charlotte Baecher of Consumers Union in February 1999 to approximately 150 PTA
representatives in New York State.
